3 ways to increase alumni giving

Our subject for today’s Tipster Friday surrounds the topic of alumni giving. This is a topic important to every college and university. The key to alumni giving though, is first alumni engagement. Ara has some tips for how to increase alumni giving through engagement, as well as some little tricks to push them in the right direction.

You really should watch her video to get the full essence of our tipster, but if you are one of those intellectual types, and would prefer to read your information, here is the transcription as well.

Hey guys, Ara here for another Tipster Friday, where I give you tips you’ve probably never heard of.

I’m going to try and not get sentimental here, but I really miss college. Art class, sunny afternoons on the lawn, sit-in demonstrations…

Anyway, support for universities is obviously really important, and alumni associations contribute a lot of cash for projects and campaigns. It can be tricky though getting alumni involved in their alma mater again. Here are three quick ideas to increase giving from your alumni.

  • Start by engaging alumni that aren’t currently members of the alumni association.

Print brochures and put them out around the city and in your alumni office. List all the ways to connect and engage with the school again. Let them know what their support means for current and future students. Do you have discount programs for members such discount tickets to athletic events? Mention it in the brochure.

  • Next, look for ways to engage your current alumni members.

Monthly newsletters make alumni feel involved and informed. Update them on upcoming events such as alumni weekends or football games. Newsletters also give you an excellent opportunity to tell alumni what their money is accomplishing.

And of course, make sure to attach a perforated piece on the back for donations. Sneaky… I know right?

  • The last way to ensure people continue their support is to just say, “thanks.” Greeting cards go a long way in letting alumni know you appreciate their support. Have everyone sign the card and scan them to add a personal touch. You’ll give them that warm, fuzzy feeling and remind them why they love their alma mater so much.

That’s all for this week. What do you guys do reach out to your alumni? I’d love to know. Leave a comment below.

See you next week!
